[As she's looking through her bag of coins Maya will inevitably hear the sound of something hitting the ground. It clinks as it does so.
A quick look will find another little pouch not so far off. If she's looking for coins there's plenty in there and if she looks upward to see where it came from she'll catch sight of that Shadow of hers, skinny as ever and waving to her with a toothy grin. Up there in the shade of the tree he's more bright shining blue eyes and sharp white teeth than anything else.]
[When she sees that gaze and those teeth, she has to restrain a laugh. It was the kind of look she'd seen out of a predatory Sickletooth, its head peeking through the tree tops and down at her.
Peter was, decidedly, far less dangerous than that and a lot easier to placate and even tease.]
Did you eat something like I told you to, my shadow?
[She bent down to scoop up his offering of coins.]
A little while ago. I brought some for you too if you want it.
[He gestures over his shoulder to something like a backpack on his back. While she was working and relatively safe in his mind he'd gone into the nearest town and stocked up on things. It helped that he felt almost nothing for others because being something of a mercenary made for good coin in this weird world. He didn't exactly love violence but he was pretty darn good at it regardless.
The way he drops out of the tree is pretty darn graceful honestly. Once there he shifts the backpack thing off of his back and drops it on the nearest table. There's fruit, there's bread, there's cured meats and cheeses and other things that'll keep while traveling.
She'll also find along the sides tucked into convenient places is his collection of knives. There are more on him as well.]
[The smell of the metal hits her nose before the bag even opens, and--yeah. Knives. She lets out a little snort, taking a small tart fruit and peeling it.]
Quite a collection, my shadow. Are you a fond of knives, or are you getting a little enamored with the idea of defending me in hand-to-hand combat?
[A loving tease, as she takes a bite of the fruit and pulls another piece of the flesh free to give to him as well.]
[Oh, food straight from her hand! In an instant Peter is more puppy than psychopath, practically radiating hearts as he beams at her. Still he does lean in and take the fruit she offers from her hand with his mouth versus like a normal human being. He's delicate in how he bites at the end but he just has to do it in the most lascivious way possible.
Once he straightens up though he's back to that good boy sweet look, chewing for a moment before he replies.]
I've always liked collecting knives. I mean they are useful after all as well as nice to look at too.
[Though Maya was initially a little surprised at the lascivious turn, she breathed out another laugh through her nose and gently dragged her claw along his tongue, knowing how much the organ was sensitive.]
I had a bit of a spat of collecting them too, and getting very familiar with sharpening them. I was trying to make my campfire cooking a bit more refined by learning how to debone fish.
[Though she uh... saw the stove in the home, and when she realized that Peter had burned it from failing to cook...... maybe he should stick to the preparation part.]
Also learned how to whittle. Have you ever learned?
[Peter smiles at her laugh, his shoulders relaxing quickly as she drags a claw down his tongue. It's probably his biggest erogenous zone after all and all it takes is a little such attention to it to have him flustered and obviously interested.
He takes a moment of basking in the attention before he straightens up to answer, a bit of healthy color still on his face as he does.]
No to both. I'm willing to learn though if that's what you need me for, darling.
[He's good at the stabbing but he's never had to do the cleaning to be honest.]
I think that'll be the safer place to get you started rather than learning how to cook with the fire, after seeing what happened in your home.
[She gives him a few playful pokes to his sides and ribs, intending to tickle him - was he even ticklish?]
I do have one task for you today, though. You can take as much or as little time as you need brainstorming on it. Pick out two names that you would give to someone... names you can see someone being comfortable with for their whole lives, whoever they are. I'll pick my favorite out of the two.
[In the right circumstances he is. At the moment he's inclined to huff out a laugh, his smile sheepish.]
Ahaha, well ... I've never been that great at cooking ...
[Particularly not with a wood stove. That's what he had had in his cabin at 'home' and in this version of his home too. He didn't really care what he ate beyond not chili and not peanut-related after all so he ended up eating a lot of microwaveable things to be honest.
He's still rubbing at his arm as he listens to her task. The rubbing slows as she continues and once she gives him a wink his gesture stills altogether. His brow furrows some and he looks more surprised than anything else.]
... You know that quick?
[Didn't it take weeks or months to know for sure? Well for human women which Maya wasn't. He didn't entirely grasp the whole heat thing clearly. Still it's enough to make him just a little flushed in the face.]
[We'll make sure it does, she says. She even promises him she'll make him a father.
He automatically answers her head bump by stretching out his fingers to ruffle them into her hair at first ... then he reaches for her, trying to draw her up close to him. He's gentle about it, not squishing her to him by any means.
There's tears in his eyes and he doesn't want to stand here sobbing in front of her. What kind of dependable partner would he be then? Instead he presses a kiss to the top of her head as he murmurs to her.]
I can't think of anything I could want more besides you. If it happens I'll be happen and if it doesn't I'll love you all the same, darling. You're my world and any children we have will be a beautiful addition to that.
[Before Maya can say much more and particular while she's still leaning into his hold Peter stoops down and moves to gather her up into his arms bridal-style. If she doesn't fight him on it anyhow.]
[She allows it, even giggling in some mild surprise - not too terribly surprised, of course, as he'd lovingly carried her around the home, had bathed her, and tended to her all during heat.]
The nearest one! They're going to have a laugh at seeing me so soon again. But there was a gorgeous crested longhorn I was looking at the other day, sweet as anything, have you ever raised one?
[Not that he would have, given Peter not exactly being from the same world...]
[It was a good way of putting that he didn't know where the hell this place was by comparison to his world. Or well, not so much his world now. It wasn't like Peter gave a damn about it. He'd arrived with the only creature precious to him, Rat. Even before Maya he hadn't cared about going back and after her, well -- he definitely didn't now.]
I've seen some of the animals though. We've got some in common.
[At least the forest animals anyhow. His brows rise.]
I've seen a couple in the marketplaces that I have no clue about.
[Oh, he SO dodged her other remark. Slippery! But she didn't want to ramp him up and get him stubborn and defensive before getting through tasks in town. She had plenty of time to nudge him.]
My last pet was a gallop. He was stunning - all iridescent black feathers and legs twice as tall as I am. He was a marvelous way to cross the desert in a reasonable time. Not that longhorns aren't charming, but gallops are always such a delight and such a good way to avoid trouble. They just aren't terribly good for pulling carts.
[Oh she is bound to know well his disinterest in other people. His early days in this world were a game of sucking up his feelings when talking to the natives, putting on good masks and generally learning to deal. He still does to some extent when it comes to his "work".
For now he's trying to picture this 'gallop' in his mind and the one image his brain is supplying is a black Chocobo. He guesses it might be close to the same thing and he tries to recall if he's seen any. He hasn't been around the deserts though.]
Desert travel is probably going to be a little too much for you for a while, darling. And probably too much for a baby after.
[He huffs out a breath, quirking a grin at her before he leans in to nuzzle her on his own accord.]
Of course! We're going to stay up north where it's warm and tropical. Only one of my relatives is south, and we'll have time to go visit them later. All my other grandchildren and great-grandchildren are here and north of here.
[He'd at least seemed softer about the idea of meeting her family, she'd noticed, and kept carefully tucked with her other notes about him. He could go about his 'business' for a while, but she hoped to find him something he'd enjoy more so they could both avoid long term trouble.]
I'm excited to introduce you. And to see them after so long! The proper family reunion is around fall, and I'm bringing you along.
[He'd seemed softer then and he seems softer now too. When she talks about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren he listens with sort of relaxed loving look. It's still odd to think of her having great-grandchildren and likely even more distant relations but he's well accepted it as a reality by now.
It's when she mentions bringing him along that he looks mildly surprised ... and then shifts quickly into that soft expression of his.]
... Does all of your family get along with each other? I can't imagine they'd come to a reunion if they didn't.
There's a few that don't get along with each other, or don't want me involved in their lives. I've never begrudged them that, of course. A few tiffs seem to happen now and then, but even so, I think it's best we still meet and see each other while we can and get to catch up on each others' stories.
[She squeezes her arms a little around his shoulders, affectionately, her tail curling around him.]
So you've got a couple of seasons before you get to share your stories, too. Join them with the rest of the family's tales.
[He'd already peeped through more than a few of Maya's papers of course. All stories more or less, all about other people's lives. He still didn't quite get what she did aside from collect those stories but it seemed important to her. She has spoke so adamantly about collecting his too and while a part of him was warm with the idea she cared ... well, his life wasn't worth collecting, was it.
Now though she phrases it as joining those stories with her family's stories. She almost made it sound like he was part of the family in that way, particularly when she curled her tail around him like that. He couldn't help but laugh just a little.]
What, mine? I don't think they'd fit in.
[It comes out as a slight joke but it did nicely to cover the ache in his heart.]

no subject
I don't know yet, but even if it didn't take, we'll make sure it does. I've never had trouble getting pregnant, though, so I'd be shocked if I wasn't.
[Pulling his hand away from his arm, she bumped her forehead against his knuckles, the gesture exactly the same as an affectionate housecat.]
You wanted to be a father, and I will make you one.

I'm ready to have children again. With a partner expressing your kind of devotion, I know they'll grow up well. I've genuinely missed being a mom.
[A little more nuzzling against his chest, as she leans into his hold, but she'll keep the affections brief.]
Daylight's burning! We've still got to get the cart so we can properly pack your things and Rat to bring along.

[Before Maya can say much more and particular while she's still leaning into his hold Peter stoops down and moves to gather her up into his arms bridal-style. If she doesn't fight him on it anyhow.]

no subject
If you're talking about something big enough to pull a cart then no. I haven't had a whole lot of pets besides Rat though.
no subject
[She nuzzles her face against his, amused at how pleased he was to carry her.]
If your arms get tired, I won't be offended. We can walk hand-in-hand as well.
[You sweet thing.]
no subject
As if I would ever get tired of carrying you.
[He doesn't even acknowledge she meant that more physically. He's too busy nuzzling her back as he carries on walking and talking at once.]
If you like them then I'm sure I'll love them. I like most animals though so that isn't hard for me to do.
no subject
New people, as well. I hope you'll come to understand them too.
no subject
Ah yeah, faraway is a good way of putting it.
